Portrait: The Botha Family

About the Client & the Brief

The Botha family—mum, dad, and their three grown sons—wanted to capture a special moment in time before life began to change. With their eldest son preparing to head off to university, they asked me to photograph them together as a family while everyone was still at home. The brief was simple but meaningful: create portraits that celebrated their family unit in this season of transition.

The Photoshoot & Process

The shoot took place in the family’s garden on a perfect sunny day. We kept things natural and straightforward—no props, no distractions, just the family together in their own space.

I photographed the family as a group to capture their closeness, but also created a few individual portraits of the sons. The focus was on warmth and authenticity, allowing the portraits to feel relaxed and true to who they are.

The Result & Reflection

What I love most about the final collection is how natural the group portraits feel, even though they were carefully composed. The images capture the Botha family as they are: connected, supportive, and ready for a new chapter.

The family loved the results and even ordered several large prints to display in their home—a lasting reminder of this moment before their household begins to change. For me, this project reflects my approach as a portrait photographer: creating images that are simple, natural, and deeply personal, capturing real connections in an honest way.
